About this site
Icant.co.uk is the web home of yours truly, Chris Heilmann, web enthusiast for a long long time and usability and accessibility evangelist in the wild wild world of corporate interaction design. For years I have followed the movements of the web and the ups and downs of its corporate side while trying to create things the best I can and share what I have learnt to keep others from making the same mistakes.
Here I point out articles I have written about web development. I chose to start an own page for that, as Onlinetools.org has grown too big and confusing, and, let's face it, is there for another reason.
Why icant.co.uk?
One phonetic reason is that I am a terrible cook, and that it was available.
Other than that, it is nice and short and reflects my reaction to many a thing that is still "common practise" on a lot of web sites and in project lifecycles.
I can't
- fathom why people still think a good web site is one that looks the same on every browser, no matter how outdated and quirky it might be.
- understand why people swallow bad user experience over and over again without telling the web master / designer why they left the site instead of using it.
- understand how trainer salaries are a lot lower than developer salaries, surely a good trainer must be a good developer and be able to explain in easy, understandable terms.
- understand how things that clearly don't make sense become common practice for every project (DHTML dropdowns anyone?).
- understand the arrogance or laziness of a lot of developers, who demand even now the user to have a certain user agent or setting to see their work.
- stop trying to raise awareness and give examples how to do it better.
